In an atypical move for Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski, the program extended a scholarship offer to rising sophomore Harry Giles. The Blue Devils coaching staff normally waits a little longer than most programs to offer players, but Giles is a phenomenal talent. He's been with the USA Basketball program for nearly a year, when he was invited to participate in the Developmental National Team mini-camp in October of 2012.
Giles traveled with the U-16 team this summer, where he helped the team capture their third straight FIBA Americas Gold Medal. That trip was costly though as Giles tore his ACL, MCL and meniscus in his left knee. After reconstructive surgery this month at Duke Hospital, Giles is on the road to recovery and taking part in the Elite 24 festivities.
In a text, Giles said that Duke extended the scholarship offer when he was on an unofficial visit for the Miami game on March 2nd of this year. Brian Flinn of Future150.com interviewed him at Elite 24 media days today when Giles revealed the news.
